Scholarships

Scholarships, money for your education that does not have to be repaid, are awarded to those students who excel academically. CUNY offers over 1,000 scholarship opportunities to its students! Here, you’ll find information on scholarships awarded by Hunter College, by external organizations and the rules of applying for a scholarship. Be sure to explore all your scholarship options to help alleviate the expense of your college tuition.

General Scholarship Rules

  • All scholarships must be displayed on your bill prior to the due date to avoid registration cancellation.
  • Hunter College will bill the entity paying the scholarship; however, it is your responsibility to ensure that the scholarship funds have reached Hunter. Please contact the organization paying your scholarship to ensure that the payment reaches Hunter in a timely manner.
  • It is expected that all funds billed are paid PRIOR to the end of the term.
  • If you have unpaid scholarship funds on your account at the end of the term, you will have a stop placed on your account.
  • Most scholarships do not pay for late fees or charges for late class drops, so please be careful before incurring these charges.

Internal Hunter or CUNY Scholarships

Hunter College and CUNY offer scholarships for incoming and continuing students. Most scholarships are awarded based on merit, need, enrollment, and declaration of a major and/or course of study. If you have declared a major, contact your specific department for specific opportunities offered.

Applicants must be full-time students who are US citizens, and have completed at least 24 credits at Hunter with at least a 3.50 GPA, and demonstrate significant financial need according to the Office of Financial Aid.

McNulty Scholars Program

The McNulty Scholars Program aims to encourage science and math students to aspire to leadership positions across industry and academia and to support students who have a commitment to the advancement of women in math and science. McNulty Scholars will work in the lab of a full-time science or math faculty mentor at Hunter for their junior and senior years and are supported for up to 2 years (junior and senior year) for a total of up to $12K, which provides a scholarship to cover at least part of their tuition, a stipend for working in the lab, and up to $500 for conference travel.

FAFSA

You will also be required to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) every year. We strongly recommend completing the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) and the Excelsior Scholarship application as well. To apply for TAP and/or the Excelsior Scholarship you and/or your parent must be a NYS resident.

Scholarship applicants must have a valid FAFSA to be eligible. In most cases, you may be selected to submit additional documentation which must be processed to fully disburse an internal scholarship. You must be mindful of their CUNYfirst “To Do List” to ensure additional documents are not required. If you are awarded a scholarship and it is determined additional documents are required, the scholarship will remain pending until a valid FAFSA is processed.
