Student Activities Multicultural Exchange

The Student Activities Multicultural Exchange (SAME) is a series of programs that address issues of diversity and multiculturalism on campus.

Purposes

  • Encourage a climate of mutual respect among members of the Hunter Community.
  • Increase your awareness of your own culture and others.
  • Engage and support our cultural, religious and social justice clubs.
  • Inspire action and encourage you to address social injustice.

African-American Foodways

From Enslavement to The Great Migration and Beyond

Thursday February 18 | 6:00 – 7:00 pm

Takes a culinary journey from the continent of Africa to the American South and beyond. We will discuss the origins of African-American foodways, dispel common myths about soul food and learn more about the African influence in regional Black American cuisines.

Cooking Class with Chef Henrietta
Learn to create delicious and nutritious meals in your home while you become acquainted with African cuisine.
Menu: Coconut Rice/ Jollof Rice, Mchuzi Ya Samaki (fish curry), Sukuma Wiki (braised spiced kale with tomatoes, chickpeas), Samosas (spiced potatoes and peas), Sambrosa Selit (date pastry).


Remembering and Connecting with Our Ancestors

Thursday February 25 | 6:00 – 7:00 pm

We will discuss the ways we can honor our ancestors in our daily lives, from traditional folkways around the world to less obvious ways in which we can uplift those who came before us. You will have the opportunity to share your own experiences with ancestral reverence.


Introduction to Plant Medicine

Thursday March 4 | 6:00 – 7:00 pm

Learn the basics of using beneficial herbs and roots to support our immune systems, nourish our bodies and assist in managing stress and anxiety. Participants will also learn how to make herbal teas and infusions, and get a delicious herbal drink recipe.


How to Eat on a Budget

March 9 | 6:00 pm

Cooking Class with Chef Henrietta
Meal prepping for a week. Learn to create delicious and nutritious meals that are also economical.
Menu: The ingredients you’ll need will be shared one week prior to class.


Debunking Common Food and Nutrition Myths

Thursday March 11 | 6:00 – 7:00 pm

Learn the truth about commonly held concepts about food, nutrition and health, many of which are now considered false. You will be able to get answers to your own nutrition questions during the discussion.
